Culture and literature beyond all borders. With Incroci di civiltà,
Venice celebrates its historic vocation as a crossroads of culture,
people, and different civilizations. This event, now in its third year,
represents more than just a festival of literature in that it provides
an opportunity to create a dialogue between seemingly-distant worlds in
an ideal meeting place where some of the most important voices in
international writing discuss their own cultures and world views. Past
editions have included authors Salman Rushdie, Orhan Pamuk, Yves
Bonnefoy, Zhang Jie, Elias Khuri, Ioanna Karistiani, Kiran Desai, Gish
Jen, Sami Tchak, Gaston Salvatore, Anita Desai, Anthony Phelps
and Vikram Seth among others. Events will be held in local theaters and
bookstores. www.culturaspettacolovenezia.it/incrocidicivilta
Art historian, critic and curator of exhibitions at an international level, Bice Curiger
has been appointed as Director of the Visual Arts Sector. The title she
has chosen for the 54th International Art Exhibition is ILLUMInazioni -
ILLUMInations. Bice Curiger said: “It is a great honour and a
privilege to be asked to be the director of the Venice Biennale, one of
the world’s most important and exceptional overviews on contemporary
art. I am very much looking forward to the great challenge.
The
festival is inspired to the huge rock concerts that usually take more
days, with several bands alternating on a large stage in the afternoon
and big names playing at night. The Heineken Jammin' Festival is the
most important concert in Italy and among the first in Europe. Like in
2007 (its tenth birthday) and onwards the HJF will take place in Parco
San Giuliano in Mestre, a 700 hectares area right on the threshold of
Venice, turned into a real rock arena for thousands of young fans. Four
days of pure rock and the celebrities of Italian and international
music.
The
most popular international marathon on water. Oared boats of all kinds
from five continents will gather by the thousands in St. Mark’s Basin by
the Ducal Palace to start off a kaleidoscopic 30-kilometer regatta
among islands, canals, and the most pleasant spots in the lagoon. Race
spectators on Sant’Erasmo, Burano, Murano and several other islands will
be met by the flotilla of rowers on its way back to Venice, where it
will then proceed through the Rio di Cannaregio—the heart of the
regatta—to the Grand Canal, and then finish at the Punta della Dogana.
The spectacle is also spread out along various canals where banqueters
and toasting fans cheer on the rowers.
Unique
and magnificent, St. Mark’s Square will become a special stage for a
rich program of summer concerts. This Venetian “living room” will be
filled with rock, blues, and jazz, depending on the evening’s featured
artist. The biggest names in international music will guarantee amazing
entertainment, must-see events that only a city like Venice can offer,
directly from its pulsing heart: St. Mark’s Square.
A
phantasmagoric pyrotechnic explosion illuminates the Venetian summer
night and amplifies the reflections of thousands of excited residents
and visitors in the natural mirror of St. Mark’s Basin. The “Redentore”
festival is one of the most celebrated and loved by Venetians. Watching
the fireworks from along the canals, palace and hotel terraces, or a
boat, surrounded by tables of local food like “bigoi in salsa”, “sarde
in saor”, “bovoeti” and watermelon, is an unforgettable experience, a
magical vision that suspends the city in a timeless night. Celebrating
in the heart of the festival is the best way to come to know Venice
today.
Artists
of international fame and emerging talents of the contemporary jazz
scene are the stars of this exciting annual event. The Venice Jazz
Festival, a week-long program in its forth year, organized by Veneto Jazz, will offer once again a calendar rich in prestigious concerts at La Fenice Theater and St. Mark’s Square,
in addition to a wide variety of concerts and collateral events
throughout the city. There will be recording label showcases as well as
more accessible events like live happy hours at Rialto, jazz lunch and dinners in selected Venetian hotels, and dj sets in various
night clubs. The festival doesn’t stop at music.
Venice
boasts the oldest and most important (together with Cannes) film
festival in the world, where the idea itself was born, where cinema
found its first world stage on which to share its own irresistible
fascination. Thousands of visitors, dozens of stars, and hundreds of
projections are crammed into ten days of fabulous festivities and
glamorous parties. Since it began in 1932, the Film Festival has
represented not only the golden standard for international film, but
also an event capable of promoting, through its welcoming of artists and
films from all over the world, a spirit of freedom and tolerance.
The
Campiello Literature Award is one of the most prestigious initiatives
of the Foundation Il Campiello, formed by the Industriali del Veneto
with the goal of contributing to the promotion and diffusion of Italian
culture. A look at past prize winners, including Primo Levi for his La
tregua (The Truce) at the first edition in 1963, reveals only the best
in post-war Italian literature.
An
authentic dive into the colors and costumes of the glorious
16th-century Serenissima Republic. The Historical Regatta, which
reenacts the 1489 arrival of Caterina Cornaro (wife of the King of
Cyprus), who renounced her throne in favor of Venice, is one of the
city’s most spectacular and picturesque moments. Every year the regatta
thrills tourists and Venetians alike as they crowd along the Grand Canal
or preside on the floating tribune to see the passing Bucintoro—a
traditional boat symbolizing the Serenissima—followed by a pageant of
historical 16th-century boats.
It’s
the 26th anniversary of an event that, since its first year, has always
succeeded in uniting epic athletic competition with the beauty of a
unique racecourse. The marathon begins along the lovely Brenta Riviera
and ends in the heart of Venice; since last year the finish line is in
St. Mark’s Square.
